History of Professional Maritime Lyceum of Kherson State Maritime Academy

    Professional Maritime Lyceum is the important structural subdivision of Kherson State Maritime Academy.

    During almost a century it trains qualified and experienced workers from graduates of secondary schools.

    Training of qualified specialists for working on board sea and river vessels is based on 1978 the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.

    Nowadays Lyceum is the only professional technical institution in Kherson region which trains seafarers for sea and river fleet.

    46 persons were accepted to the first form and 8 ones to the second form. They were students who worked simultaneously in manufacturing, in workshops of State Steamship Company and port administration. In 1924 thirty persons were accepted to the form of marine cadets and thirty three – to the form of ship-engineering specialty. Students were trained as ship machinists, hull-builders and boilermakers.

    In 1926 Water Transport School was renamed into Factory Training School.

  Since that time the specialized classrooms and workshops have been created there: on physics, social science, drawing, engineering, rigging. They were equipped with old machinery and boiler accessory. Everything was repaired by the students themselves.

  Factory Training School was reorganized into Industrial School №1 under Mykolaiv Regional Department of Labour Reserves in October 2, 1940 by the Order of Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. During the Great Patriotic War it was moved into village Kuibyshevo Tatar republic. In April 8, 1950 Industrial School №1 was changed into №7 and in March 28, 1953 it became №3.

  According to the Order of the Soviet of Ministers of the USSR it was reorganized into Vocational School №3 in August 2, 1955 and in 1975 – into Technical School №3. From 1984 it becomes Secondary Vocational School №3.

    During these years students have mastered a lot of professions: electrical gas welder, ship builder, turner, carpenter, weaver, helmsman, 1st class-motorman, electrical installer, stewardess, ships cook and others.

    In 2003 Secondary Vocational School №3 was joined up as a structural subdivision to Kherson Maritime College and reorganized into Professional Maritime Lyceum of Kherson Maritime College.

    In 2007 Kherson State Maritime Institute was organized by the Order of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and Professional Maritime Lyceum was recognized as its structural subdivision.

    In June 15, 2011 under the direction №540 by Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Kherson State Maritime Academy and Professional Maritime Lyceum of Kherson State Maritime Academy were organized.

    Nowadays Lyceum has modern material and technical basis for teaching, training and development of its students. There are 16 specialized classrooms, 8 laboratories, 2 workshops, gym, assembly hall, 2 new laboratories for barmen and waiters. They are equipped with modern technical facilities.

    Taking into account a modern society and the demands of the labor market, as well as the needs of main employers and companies, Lyceum also develops and improves training of specialists is related professions.

    Nowadays Professional Maritime Lyceum is the first stage of modern educational system and the basis for continuous education of marine officers.

  Lyceum graduates have the opportunity to continue their education first in Marine College under the integrated plans, and then directly in Kherson State Maritime Academy for higher maritime education.
